The U.N. may not be so important for long. Looks like the gravy train may be coming to a halt.

(WASHINGTON) – U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, issued the following statement regarding a news report that the acting director of the investigations division of the UN’s internal oversight office, Michael Dudley, is himself being investigated for retaliating against whistle-blowers:

“The irony of the UN’s chief investigator being investigated is overwhelming, but the fact that the U.S. continues to contribute billions of taxpayer dollars every year to an unaccountable, unreformed UN is no laughing matter.

“These allegations reinforce the need for expanded and effective oversight of the UN. Next week, our Committee will lead the way by holding the first of several briefings and hearings on UN reform.

“But we won’t see the real transparency, accountability, and reform that must happen at the UN until the U.S. takes concrete steps to help ensure such an outcome. In the near future, I will be introducing legislation to put UN reform in motion. This bill will build on my previous legislative efforts on this issue and on investigations into UN malfeasance conducted by this Committee four years ago.

“It is time, once again, to focus our efforts on ensuring that U.S. taxpayer dollars are being well-spent and are advancing our nation’s interests.”

Clearly it is not the entire UN that sexually exploits children, anymore than any other organization with a few bad apples.

What is interesting to me however, is that in the 6th of the Op Center Series Created by Tom Clancy, "State of Siege" the sexual exploitation of children in 1993 Cambodia by UN personnel is part of the plot.

UN spokesman, Nick Birnback, said that it was impossible to ensure "zero incidents" within an organisation that has up to 200,000 personnel serving around the world.

"What we can do is get across a message of zero tolerance, which for us means zero complacency when credible allegations are raised and zero impunity when we find that there has been malfeasance that's occurred,"
