Total violent crime for 2024 in the District of Columbia is down 35% from 2023 and is the lowest it has been in over 30 years, according to data collected by the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and announced by United States Attorney Matthew M. In addition to the overall violent crime reduction, homicides are down 32%; robberies are down 39%; armed carjackings are down 53%; assaults with a dangerous weapon are down 27% when compared with 2023 levels, with the District reporting the fewest assaults with dangerous weapons and burglaries in over 30 years.

Example. In four or five prior years, the incidence of felony assaults may have been on the rise. The locals and the press are making noise about it. The commissioner feels insecure in his or her job (as do various police top brass). So, quietly, they direct that arrests made in such cases are reported as misdemeanors. Viollà. The crime stats look a lot better. The victims don’t. But, that’s a them problem.

And it cuts both ways. If the PD needs greater funding, they can tweak numbers by labeling a misdemeanor as a felony. Do it often enough and suddenly “crime” stats seem to warrant more policing.

But where some mayor wants to run on a success in lowering the crime rate (or crime’s severity), the arrests for what ought to be felonies might get blurred by declaring that they are only misdemeanors.

I have been in DC in the lay few years, visiting. The encampments of homeless is typical of blue cesspools. The aggressiveness of pan-handlers who clearly have either bad drug addictions or other serious mental illness really the ant deniable.
