I finally managed to find a copy of my 2014 article on protective tariffs as a major cause of sectional strife and the Deep South's secession. I have substantially revised and expanded the article and have published it on my Civil War website. The article does not argue that the tariff was the main reason the Deep South seceded but that the tariff was the second-most-important cause of the first wave of secession. Orthodox Civil War historians, ignoring a mountain of contrary evidence, claim that the tariff was a minimal, minor, unimportant factor in secession. My article proves it was a significant factor.
