The Basilidians believed that his spirit was beside the crucifixion mocking his killers, but not that his physical body was not crucified. They were a Gnostic sect of Christianity who believed that life was separated in three parts (much like mainstream Buddhism) one the body (which was crucified) the second the mind (this is between body and spirit, it is the communication between the two), and finally the spirit. The Basilidians believed that Christ's spirit and mind stood to the side and mocked those that were crucifying his body, for he knew with a certainty that death was impossible for he was God come in human form to teach and redeem the faithful. It takes their beliefs out of context to say they believed another was killed in his place.
