The last election was actually a "teachable moment" illustrating an important aspect of how the EC system works. Many of the founders were worried that popular democracy would favor densely populated, urban areas while neglecting everyone else. So they built a system that would bite back if that got too bad.

Now, I happen to think electing Trump was an abysmal mistake, but it was a mistake borne out of exactly the kind of elitist, detached government the founders wanted to prevent. The system worked.
