If you accept the NT or Bible or Talmud, or the Quran to be true - then you would have to accept the "story" of Jesus having been accused by Jews of blaspheme towards Judaism. Hence aspiring a death verdict (which they wanted) but was in the hands of the Romans. Pilates saw in Jesus a person who defied the Roman Emperor to be God (aka blaspheme) and regarded him as a Jewish Zealot, aka the very people that defied Roman rule. Hence Death-Verdict.
