The reaction of other passengers in deep blue charlotte nc to the stabbing is almost as horrible as the killing itself

....and could plunge a knife into you as soon as you turn your back? ...
Who said to turn your back? You never turn your back unless you are far enough away to make a run for it. You said you are slow, so always move off at an angle. One eye on him, one eye taking in your surroundings. Is there anything within reach you could use as a weapon? Any 90 degree turns you can take? Any cover? Many variables. Don't bet your ass on pulling that gun before he closes the distance unless you have at least 10 feet to work with or you can put yourself out of his field of vision for a few seconds. You did say you're slow. Oh, and make as much noise as you can.

...I noticed that many of your posts are extremely optimistic and you seem to think there is an obvious or easy way out in bad situations and you somehow will always prevail. ...
No one always prevails, but what are you gonna do? Curl up in a ball and cry? Sit in a seat on a train staring at the floor while a woman is being stabbed to death two feet away from you?

... I don't see anything noble or realistic about your posture on self-defense.
You want realistic? Realistic is that if the guy has a knife and has any idea what to do with it (most don't - if he takes it out and waves it around in front himself, you're in good shape), you are very likely to get cut. Cut doesn't necessarily mean killed. Maintain focus and work through it. Keep a level head and keep moving/talking/yelling/throwing or whatever else you have to do.

No shit. You get it. So why **** around and find out that that your posture is an unrealistic one when dealing with crazy people with weapons?
Because I've been in a lot of situations a lot of times, and I still train pretty much every day. I'm training my oldest son now. About another year or two and he won't need me anyway.

If I had been there the guy would be dead, and I would probably be in jail.

I carry concealed. If I were in the same car and saw this nut sitting close to me, I would have sat facing him. My .380 would be out of the holster and in my hand but still concealed. When you carry you are always alert for anything that might be dangerous.

And I don't do hand-to-hand combat, especially with a crazed knife-wielding nut.

And the girl would probably be dead anyway.

Seven rounds rapid fire from 10 yards. Glock 42 .380, FMJ/FN.

Man, you suck!

A person (or people) wouldn't have to go Chuck Norris on the guy. If one or two adult males got between him and the woman it might have changed the whole dynamic. Just be in his space, get between him and her, change his focus of attention, talk to him for a second, and at least give the poor woman time to go move to another car on the train. Maybe create time for someone who did know what he or she was doing to see what was up and go put the piece of shit on his face until police could board at the next stop.
How long was it from the time he stood up until he stabbed her? 1-2 seconds maybe? I'm sorry, but you are full of shit on this one.

Are you asking? I don't have the exact timing, do you? Do you think some psycho working himself up to this was squirming around in his seat for a bit first? Seems likely to me. I've seen still photos of him standing behind the woman. That had to take some time.

There is a video you can find. He stands up and then stabs her withing 1-2 seconds. No hesitation, no delay, no nothing!

More afraid of that than of watching this poor woman be murdered? And Penny got off, so that doesn't stand up as an excuse for cowardice.
Yes, it does. Penny's life was destroyed over that incident. Why don't you recall what he went through? How much did his legal defense cost him?

I am surprised at your attitude on this!

Fear is real. ...
And relative. I'm sure that poor woman's last moments were filled with a deeper fear than a legal proceeding. I hope those other people on that train felt something when they went home and looked in a mirror.

AND THE SHOOTER WOULD BE IN JAIL.

It's not legal to kill someone because they make threatening gestures with a knife (only the police are allowed to do this).
And, shooting him after he stabbed the girl wouldn't help the girl.
And, killing someone who is not threatening you directly is murder.
It IS legal if one is in fear of imminent harm.
