N'ah. They've been doing this for years (as long as I can remember) where I am from. Everybody knows what purple paint is.

It's cheaper and easier to put up than a "no trespass" sign and you don't have to stick a nail in a tree.

It's mostly to let hunters know to stay off property. Though, most of them (especially raccoon hunters and coyote hunters) will just ignore it. If you are lucky they just won't cut your fences.
