Why is Rio hosting an Olympics when they are on the verge of fiscal collapse, along with the rest of the world?

What purpose does it serve anymore? Do we want to see Rio collapse economically so that we can watch Russia dope all their athletes so that the world can attest to just how great Putin really is?

And who watches the Olympics anymore?

I've heard people say that it brings the world together, to which I say, Pfft.
