The OP doesn't specify which manner of bear ... if he's afraid of Koala bears, then he's hopeless ...

We have brown bears here in the American West ... and humans are on their menu ... the .45 caliber gun is good for protection, a half dozen rounds will knock the bear down and give you a chance to run ... but keep shooting, the bear will get up and chase you ... bear hunting you'll want the 20mm Vulcan ... a thousands rounds in ten seconds should discourage the bear from further pursuits ... then you have a chance to toss in a few grenades ... or line up your 88mm anti-tank howitzer ...

I saw a photo on the young internet many years ago of a man who had been killed and eaten by an eNORmous grizzly. The bear was caught in the act and killed. The first picture showed someone holding up one of the bear's front paws. It was signicantly longer and wider than the man's face and the claws looked to be 7 or 8 inches long. Then they showed a photo of the victim. It was really hard to look at because he resembled nothing so much as a half finished box of fried chicken.
