Our system allows this moronic patchwork we have. Nobody (right/left) is adult enough to admit that the system needs to be fixed. Likewise for the belief that our constitution is built for the year 2020 and beyond.

There haven't been that many, Article 5 was part of the genius of the Constitution. The founders knew the country would change and they included a method to allow the States to make agreed to changes to the document. Remember, the Union and the Federal Government were creations of the States, the States are the ultimate sovereigns when it comes to making changes to them.
