What is the media trying to do?

As the Harvey Weinstein scandal spreads like an STD throughout the entertainment industry worldwide, as the courage of those coming forward to name names inspires similar courage in others, we cannot allow ourselves to become so accustomed to the allegations that they lose their power to outrage.
Although some male victims have come forward, the alleged victims here are mostly vulnerable young women and children. Worse, so far, all of the alleged abusers are the very men whose primary responsibility in any civilized society is to protect women and children.

We need to work on - and be more careful with - our language.

"Sexual assault" can mean anything from pretending to grope a woman's breasts through a flack jacket (see Franken pictures) to rape.

And what no one is willing to admit or talk about is that "groping" is often the first step in a consensual sexual encounter, and it is sometimes welcome. Indeed, whether it is "groping" or "making a pass" or "sexual assault" is entirely dependent on the "victim's" attitude, personal opinion about the groper, and state of mind. Which - I hesitate to point out - can CHANGE after the fact, sometimes decades after the fact.

As repulsive as Harvey Weinstein appears to be now, I have NO DOUBT whatsoever that he got mountains of consensual "pussy" through some of the horrible stratagems that he is now being castigated for. As Dr. B.F. Skinner would observe, this conduct was "reinforced" by frequent success, so it is not surprising that it continued for a long, long time.

As the Harvey Weinstein scandal spreads like an STD throughout the entertainment industry worldwide, as the courage of those coming forward to name names inspires similar courage in others, we cannot allow ourselves to become so accustomed to the allegations that they lose their power to outrage.
Although some male victims have come forward, the alleged victims here are mostly vulnerable young women and children. Worse, so far, all of the alleged abusers are the very men whose primary responsibility in any civilized society is to protect women and children.
