I did some reading on the specific type of Trauma that is carried by proximity to high explosive charges....it's actually pretty bad. There is a deep and penetrating tissue disruption.

Well, to start with, he would have been physically unable to do his job, and the military would have either medically discharged him or put him on restricted duty until he got better.

That wasn't done. He was still on active duty.
