Fact is that when Clarence Thomas was born, he could have been arrested for having a white wife.
In the state he was born, he would be lynched for consorting with a white woman.

When he retired, Bush did not want to replace him with a white male judge.
So he looked at the list of black judges and had to go pretty far down to find a conservative black judge. Pretty rare

Thomas was not the most qualified judge
He was not the most qualified black judge.

I wouldn't say it was a DEI hire but certainly Republicans were tired of being falsely accused all the time of being racist and Bush wasn't exactly the strongest personality going.
Trump doesn't play that game. I would hope that when Thomas retires, they replace him with a young strict Constitutional constructionist, not some wild-eyed "I'll just pull some right out of my ass" type.

Republicans weren't falsely accused of anything. White slaveowners believed they were falsely accused too. Denying racism has been a long-time white tradition. Trump is a racist, and Clarence Thomas has done more to turn back the clock on things that allowed him to become a U.S. Supreme Court justice than any KKK member could. A white man did similar things during the Revolutionary War. No one white today will declare that Benedict Arnold was a great American. Only right-wing extremists consider Thomas a great American.

It was progressives that pushed for a racially integrated Supreme Court

The very court he sits on supported decisions that put an end to our nations racist policies.
He has supported decisions that repeal those decisions

It was regressives who pushed tranny ideology.
