Because the price is determine by the market and speculators are the cause. Big oil can sell their oil below market price but they know darn well that their stock price would crash.

If US sells a barrel for say $30, the Saudis will order drastic supply cut which leads to higher prices globally and will affect all consumers. I’ll let you draw out the ripple effects globally.
