As usual, Trump is being given the very special treatment that he has always gotten. No handcuffs. No mugshots. No restrictions on travel. No gag order that matters. It's good to be Republican.
None of the charges are about any of the documents he gave back, which destroys most of the idiot Trump cult conspiracy theories.
If If he had just said "Oops, I made a mistake, we packed these up by mistake" when archives asked him for the documents, and given them all back, he'd be facing no charges.
Even after the FBI raid, if Trump had just said "Oops, I made a mistake, I thought I had given them all back", he'd be facing no charges.
Trump was given many opportunities to get out of this, opportunities that someone who wasn't a rich Republican never would have gotten. Law enforcement has always looked for any excuse not to indict Trump and let him off with a fine, and law enforcement really wanted an excuse not to indict him here. But Trump took up all the slack they gave him and fashioned it into a noose for himself. He left law enforcement no choice.
Trump could _still_ reach a deal with DoJ. DoJ still doesn't want a trial. DoJ still wants to let Trump beat the rap. Trump could plead and end up with just probation. But he won't. He just can't believe that this, time, he can't lie and bribe his way out of his legal trouble. So, he'll end up with prison time.
And no amount of lying and crying and whataboutisms by the Trump cultists here will change that.
