A women's, I guess, "boutique", the barbershop--think Andy Griffith show, for real. And a dime store on the corner, a "dime store", wtf is that anymore. Newspaper office was there, and of course the police and fire department. Rescue squad was down the road.

Dad ran the local grocery store. He had a small independent as a competitor, which wasn't much. The hours were 8 to 5, Monday through Thursday, except for Wednesday, they closed at noon. The whole town did. It was wild. Friday and Saturday, open till six. And I am telling you, it is backed up in the aisles almost every afternoon.

But here is the thing, maybe a good question for AI. How many sku's did that grocery store sale? I can tell you, very few. Dad's big thing as he got older was Jiffy cornbread. But even I remember the day, working the shelves myself in my first job. I mean it had like a ten row spread, prime shelf position, and you moved multiple cases, sometimes, per day. Now, lucky to have one facing and luckier still to sell it before it goes out of date. What happened?

Multiculturalism. Nothing says it more than the dinner table. Growing up, I didn't need a calendar, I knew what day of the week it was by what was on the supper table, the same each and every week. But now, look at the choices. In the grocery store, for eating out. Sure, Mexican everywhere, but Thai, Indian, and of course Chinese and Japanese. And while food is a very visible result, there are so many other things. Clothes, I have no doubt, Dad dropped as much on one of my Easter suits as I last did on one of mine. Yes, the quality was better then, I love me some vintage clothes.

Assimilation must come from those who arrive from other nations, or it affects the nation negatively. Multiculturalism/diversity is not good in that you can travel from neighborhood to neighborhood and see entirely different ways of living. There is a difference in still celebrating ethnic/culture of groups and living like the old country.
