Congress is a legacy of the Roman Republic. The House of Representatives represented the interests of the plebeians. But since all citizens now have equal rights, the lower house has lost its meaning. Why is it needed?

We still are a country mostly of commoners, but in such large number deserving of representation and as another check and balance. There is that thing about it being in the constitution, also. Guess we'll keep it.

It doesn't matter, the main thing is that everyone has equal political rights. The plebeians did not have equal rights with the patricians

So they should relinquish all rights to representation? What country were you raised in?

Duh...read the Preamble and Article I of the Constitution.

Senate Is enough
Spoken like an anti constitutionalist right-winger. Part of the reason independents can't support people from your end of the spectrum.

I have right-wing views, but I didn't even know that. This is not a coincidence: the right thinks systemically.

No. What used to be the conservative party, supporters of law and order and the constitution of the United States has become a lawless enemy of the country they grew up in and the constitution as written by the founding fathers, yet they cannot point to another country that has lasted as long, prospering so well. Go figure.

In fact, the United States differs from other countries in its decentralization and a large bias towards a patriarchal, tribal form of power.

In the US, in particular, there are many mechanisms against populism and ochlocracy.

Therefore, your arguments are not in favor of the plebeian system of power. In the US, it is less plebeian than in other democracies.

How many outlasted or prospered as well? None, eh?

This just says that the plebeian systems work poorly. This allows totalitarian regimes to manipulate the masses, gain votes through media advertising and vote rigging, and exploit political illiteracy.

The Senate represents the people. Nothing else is needed.

The House controls the collective tax money of the US and hands it over to Wall Street in return for campaign contributions.
Lesson over.

Thanks Yuri. Back to the toll farm now.

The experience of Rome itself also speaks of this. The Roman Republic turned into the Totalitarian imperial regime of Olligarchy. So the right way is the opposite: to patrician direct democracy

The US has almost always been an oligarchy because you need lots of money to reach 350 million people.

Congress is the direct descendant of Parliament. The House represents the excitable mobs AKA “the people”. The Senate was supposed to represent the States Governments thus giving them a voice in federal affairs. Think of them originally as an Ambassador. We don’t elect Ambassadors to the UN or any other country.

But, since the Seventeenth Amendment we’ve cut out the States as a political entity and created the same class of crooks and liars but with longer terms.

Rye Catcher mentioned reading the Constitution but I suspect he’s just shouting into the void. No one actually reads and applies the text as ratified. If they did we’d be better off. If you did, the thread wouldn’t have been started.
