Overview

• Read the Report
Summary: The economy performs much better during Democratic presidential administrations than during Republican ones.

Key findings

  • Since 1949, there has been a Democratic advantage in the average performance of key macroeconomic indicators measuring economic health, including:
    • Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth
    • Job growth
    • Unemployment rate
    • Growth in inflation-adjusted wages
    • Growth of market-based incomes per capita
    • Inflation
    • Interest rates
  • This Democratic advantage is across the board in all variables we measure but strongest in private-sector outcomes—notably, business investment, job growth, and the growth of market-based incomes.
  • Household income growth (adjusted for inflation) was faster on average and far more equal during Democratic administrations, and the Democratic advantage shows up for every group.

Why this matters

We suspect that the simple facts on economic performance during Democratic and Republican administrations aren’t well known. Providing accurate economic information at a time of rampant misinformation supports an informed citizenry.

Given how clear the data are, it is striking that public opinion polling has consistently shown that voters rate Republicans more highly as the party that is better at managing the economy.

But it is our sense that the simple facts on real-time economic performance during Democratic and Republican administrations—and how starkly better this performance is during Democratic administrations—aren’t particularly well known. And these facts constitute important information people should have during this time of rampant misinformation.

Is the average American really this misinformed?

Are they that easily led by the nose of what they hear from conservative disinformation?

Are they just willfully ignorant to the facts right in front of them?

Is this just the proof that all mainstream media sources are partisan right leaning corporations that purposely misinform, and not allow their journalists to report these facts?

Do they not know how to do a simple google search?

A combination of all of the above?

The problem with this argument. Bill Clinton went along with the Republicans and rescinded the laws that allowed what happen under Bush to happen.

Congress controls the BUDGET.

During Bill Clinton, Bill Clinton shut the government down in 1995 demanding MORE SPENDING. He never got it.

Now, he takes credit for the "Clinton economy" he shut the government down to stop....

True FISCAL CONSERVATISM WORKS

CUT SPENDING

THAT IS WHAT WORKS

No budget has ever passed without the president signing off on it.

Under communism the government use to say how good jobs are, GDP growth, inflation, unemployment, housing market, interest rate, growth so on.

You expect me to believe what the liberal government says? And what BS they publish?

Private employers added just 77,000 jobs in February, far below expectations

And I'm sure that number will eventually be adjusted and be LOWER than 77,000

So far Trump's off to a bad start.

Total waste of elections here.
How come on Bush's watch and Trump's watch, important/good paying manufacturing jobs are lost but they add hospitality jobs?

Leisure and hospitality jobs jumped by 41,000

These are not good jobs you can raise a family on. Perhaps all the people who lose their good paying jobs have to go get a job in hospitality. Waiting on tables

Trump Delivers Gloating, Grievance-Filled Speech Hours After Sending Economy Reeling

The address to Congress was packed with the lies and grievances of his rally speeches, and barely acknowledged the economic chaos he is causing.

On a day that his new 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada sent the markets reeling, Trump barely acknowledged the concerns.
ā€œThere’ll be a little disturbance, but we’re OK with that,ā€ he said. ā€œIt won’t be much.ā€
He lied about the state of the economy on the day of his return to office: ā€œWe inherited from the previous administration an economic catastrophe and an inflation nightmare.ā€

He blamed the current price of eggs on the former president: ā€œJoe Biden, especially, let the price of eggs get out of control.ā€

He went through his familiar litany of absurdly old people on the Social Security rolls: ā€œ1.3 million people from ages 150 to 159.ā€
In fact, Biden’s economy was enjoying steady growth and inflation had come down to under 3% annually ― a ā€œsoft landingā€ from the pandemic that many economists thought would be impossible.
Egg prices have spiked since Trump took office

And the statistics about Social Security, while eroding confidence in the national retirement and disability system, are entirely inaccurate ― the result of Musk’s young aides, who have been rampaging through the federal agencies’ computer systems, not understanding the Social Security Administration’s rolls.
He falsely claimed that new auto plants are ā€œopening up all over the place.ā€ He, yet again, lied about how tariffs work, claiming that ā€œtrillionsā€ would come in from other countries when, in reality, tariffs are collected by American importers and passed along to American consumers.
Trump then turned to foreign policy, where he repeated his imperialist threats of annexing territory belonging to other countries. ā€œWe’re taking it back,ā€ he said, regarding the Panama Canal. And about Greenland, which belongs to NATO ally Denmark, he said, ā€œOne way or another we’re going to get it.ā€

Trump also did not acknowledge that dictator Vladimir Putin started the war with his invasion three years ago. Nor did he mention that Putin has targeted residential buildings with missiles and drones while his troops have raped and murdered civilians in areas they seized ― both actions that experts describe as war crimes.
Dwarfing the amount of time Trump spent on the economy or foreign policy, though, was how much of the speech Trump spent attacking trans women participating in women’s sports, DEI efforts in government, and industry and ā€œculture warā€ issues generally.
