Tariffs are always going to be immensely effective when you are the importing nation who are in essence propping up the other nations economy.
China is the easiest example. I could win such a trade war in my sleep when you are losing a trillion a year, far more when you consider IP theft, currency devaluation, outright deception on their trade listings (why is this allowed?) and other non-tariff barriers.
Canada is in a difficult spot due to our well known human right abuses and infiltration into U.S corporations operating here. Trump seems focused on taking back the auto industry and that is going to be a difficult situation for us to overcome since we have lost our best and brightest for decades. Even Elon was educated in Ontario, imagine how poor he would be if he had remained in Canada?
Tariffs work when other nations are cheating. Trump will force markets open and eliminate as best as possible the cheating of foreign nations and companies.
Shocked, in the end a decent deal is going to be cut. No way are the Canadians going to be thrown under the bus.
Will it be as good as now for Canada? Probably not. But I do believe that the vision is to get a group of high economic entities, trading with each other, and cutting out those NOT in the group. Canadian lumber and minerals, will surely be well received with our other trading partners who will soon sign on.
As far as autos-------------> I am not a soothsayer, but I am guessing that the odd country out is Mexico. Canada and the USA can make things kinda balance with cost, but they can NOT with Mexico. You have enviro regs, we have enviro regs, you pay well, we pay well, you aren't going to allow tires to burn in your back yard, neither are we. Same can NOT be said for Mexico.
I contend, that after the deal----------->your auto and supplier infrastructure will INCREASE, ours will INCREASE, Mexicos will COLLAPSE! And the only thing Canada, after the deal will have to do, is promise not to let the Chinese build plants there, and ship those vehicles in at the either ZERO tariff rate you will get, or the next to NOTHING rate you will enjoy.
Understand------------->with the wages and non enviro position that Mexico has, neither of our country's can compete. And IF the Chinese build auto plants in Mexico, and are allowed to EXPORT to both of our jurisdictions as they planned, our industries are D-E-A-D!
And I would ask you as a reasonable person---------->is it NOT amazing that the Left from both of our country's demand enviro protections, while supporting Mexico's auto industry, that pollutes both of our country's more than we do, times 5! The Left from USA and CANADA, are disingenuous as far as I am concerned. To this day I wonder who is actually financing them. Bet if we found out, they would be in deep-doo!
