There is no such thing as being 100% free and living in society. We all give up some of our freedoms to live with other people and every freedom you get is a restriction on my freedom so saying "The right beleives in freedom" is a fantasy. Saying the "left believes in govt." is more accurate but I've never heard a conservative say they want no government, not even Rand Paul goes that far. So the truth is that everyone "believes in govt.", they just don't agree on what that government should do.

100% stupid. Its never temporary!!! Thats why we are far richer than ever and give far more temporary help than ever. When Clinton ended welfare as we know it by making it workfare fully half decided they were no longer poor.

Neither one of those men had a problem dealing with the ambiguous nature of humanity. I know many conservatives have difficulty with ambiguity but that's how people actually are. There are no absolutely good people or bad people, we are all a conflicted mess in our hearts. You've seen shows where a moral dilemma is represented by miniature angels and demons arguing on the protagonist's shoulders. It's an enduring visual because it is true and most often circumstances dictate our choices.

Not doing anything to ameliorate poverty creates torches and pitchforks, and nooses. Hungry people are angry people, one of the few absolutes to be found in human society. The lessons of the French revolution have not been lost on the powerful even if run of the mill conservatives have forgotten it. Yank away food stamps and you will just have to spend that money on military police and prisons.
