The White House on Tuesday asserted President Trump would not cut Social Security or Medicare after tech billionaire Elon Musk’s comments about the need to examine entitlement spending gained traction.

Musk, a top Trump adviser leading the effort to overhaul the federal workforce through the Department of Government Efficiency, appeared on Fox Business Network on Monday for a rare television interview, where he noted that most government spending is on entitlements.

“The Trump Administration will not cut Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid benefits,” the White House said in a press release. “President Trump himself has said it (over and over and over again).”

If not mistaken, Musk is referring to revamping the Social Security and Medicare "system", meaning computer system. These departments are using a system developed in COBOL, a programming language created in the 1960's. I can understand why there may be problems with the system, COBOL doesn't have a "date data type". As a result, if the system is redesigned, there may be some fallout as a result.

No programming language has a "date data type".
When we had the big millennium scare in 2000, it was because Windows was running the date as an offset from 1985.
While there are better programming languages than COBOL, there is no real reason to drop old code that is proven to work correctly all this time.

The program was going broke in a few short years and neither party disputes that. If we do nothing, everyone gets about a 25% cut in benefits which will do a lot of damage. Trump isn't cutting anyone's benefits.

Social Security does not pay out only what was paid in.
The US national debt had its interest paid from the Social Security surplus for over 50 years, so the government owes everyone all their Social Security, regardless of what is being paid in currently. So the government will have to make up the difference, from income taxes.
Any cut in benefits is illegal.

Any cuts to entitlements will be made to stop fraud and improper payments... that will strengthen SS.... we all know that Medicaid is chocked full of fraud and that hurts the uninsured and poor... so finding and cutting out fraud and waste is needed to save these programs.... The House budget plan directs the committee responsible for Medicaid to cut $880 billion from the budget over the next 10 years.

As for Social Security and Medicare, sooner or later we are going to have to raise the retirement age. It is suicidal not to.

Of course Social Security is an "entitlement". That is because it is our own money being paid back to us after as much as 50 years of paying in. The interest rate on loaning all that money for so long to the government, is only about 3%.
