Most doctors just made decent middle class livings before the 1960's. Medicare and friendly Congressmen, mostly Democrats but also quite a few Republicans, effectively handed the hospitals and medical industry over to HMOs and publicly traded corporations, and financialized it into shit, same as they've done with every other major industry in the U.S., sucking the life out of them and leaving them bankrupt and gutted.
