Hell no. For a young person from a humble family it doesn't get much better than the military. Decent pay with no rent. Food is covered. Free healthcare and college. It's a steal. Versus what? 16 dollars an hour at Walmart with a rent bill and no healthcare?

The military is hurting for exactly the reasons mentioned by other people. Their image has taken a huge hit in the last decade. A big chunk of recruits come from those traditional homes that don't appreciate seeing male admirals walking around in heels.

Traditionally, military recruiting increases when the unemployment rate is high.
There will always be those families and regions where military service is a tradition.
