Where is the irony in Philippine independence? The Filipinos suffered terribly in WW2 and they earned the right to independence. It should be noted that for some reason FDR decided that old WW1 veteran Douglas MacArthur who served honorably since WW1 and retired as Chief of Staff should be persuaded to take on the responsibility of being the front line commander in the area most likely to be the target of the first Japanese attack in WW2. MacArthur accepted the assignment and became the defacto ambassador to the Philippine government and enjoyed hobnobbing in the the cocktail circut in Manila rather than planning for the inevitable war with Japan History is ruthless and history tells us that MacArthur failed in his mission and failed to comply with the "War Plan" and finally abandoned his Troops to suffer and die barely four months after hostilities commenced.
