Most Americans know the importance of regular exercise to maintain good physical and mental health. A study of how various sports extend life expectancies revealed that tennis was THE very best sport for a long life. You can't make this stuff up.

I play six times a week, so I will probably live to be 142. But I'm here to help, so I will reveal some of my best ideas on tennis and the healthy living it promotes.

Doubles tennis cuts down on the need for one player to cover a pretty big court, so a lot of doubles sets are played.
It occurred to me that you can encourage your partner to up his/her game with some point-by-point advice as the set progresses.

Remember these important tips to tell your partner after they fail to return the tennis ball:

1. How could you miss that easy shot?
2. What's the matter with you today?
3. I think you need glasses.
4. Do you need to take a break?
5. I could have made that volley left-handed.
6. Come on now, let's really try.
7. No, hit the ball OVER the net.
8. I need some help here!
9. You're not very good at this game, are you.
10. Okay, that's it. I'm getting myself a new partner.

These are just the team-player phrases that will encourage your partner to (fill in the blank).

I was never much good at tennis, or baseball. The ball was always a blur. However, I might take up pickleball this summer, if my daughter and granddaughter will also, looks like fun.

I used to play tennis and then raquetball and now I play pickleball. Racquet sports are the best.

I forget who said it, some longevity expert, but I heard last week that the longest living sports players are racquet sports players.
 
I tried hard to master tennis one summer when I was in middle school. Futile. I had to accept early on that I was just terrible at any sport with a round ball. So, it came down to football and wrestling. Wrestling worked out and has for 48 years now.

I actually have developed my own 'racket' for longevity: "Don't drink the water!" 85 this month, goin' strong. :)

Dunno... berating your tennis partner might shorten your life... especially if your partner is your spouse. Tennis racquets make for easy weapons to use.

The following have been identified as increasing life expectancy (with the average life expectancy increase listed in brackets):
1. Calisthenics (3.1 years)
2. Walking or jogging (3.2 years)
3. Swimming (3.4 years)
4. Cycling (3.7 years)
5. Soccer (4.7 years)
6. Badminton (6.2 years)
7. Tennis (9.7 years)

Exercise, in general, is key to living longer. But playing certain sports can increase your life expectancy even more. A study done by the Copenhagen City Heart Study (CCHS) and published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings followed 8,577 people over 25 years and found that playing certain sports increased life expectancy—with one adding almost a decade to the lives of participants.

This further emphasizes the link between social interaction and longevity. Take, for instance, the people who live in Blue Zones (aka the longest-living people in the world): one of their pillars of longevity is connecting with others and maintaining strong relationships.

Furthermore, the study determined that these findings were the same even when researchers controlled for other aspects like education, socioeconomic status, and age.
 
The problem with tennis as you grow older is that it requires maximum exertion, time after time. You are starting, stopping, and changing directions. Those are not good for your joints, even if they are good for your heart and lungs. Once you reach a certain age, you really should not be out there. Here's how you can tell: when an opponent hits a drop shot and you don't even go after it.

Quit.

Take up pickle-ball. You can take that game to the grave.
 
Is there an assumption among limmo liberals that normal people develop tennis skills and have the time and membership to join tennis clubs?

My dad died at 55 with a defective heart and diabetes. I kept telling him to play tennis, but he wouldn't listen.

The correct word for it when you get older is "rasslin'."

A better activity, to be serious for a moment, is Tai Chi - teaches balance and flexibility.

I prefer the Mexican variety...Tai Chi Jua Jua

The fast form of taijichuan is pretty strenuous. It's sort of a form of wrestling too (without the sword).
