Some people, apparently, enjoy being abused. Childhood trauma? Genetic malfunction? Drugs? Not sure but it's clear that they're thoroughly brainwashed and completely obedient. They wouldn't have made good Continental Soldiers or Vikings.

There certainly have been several psychological explanations. The one I've seen the most is that some people are particularly susceptible to following individual authoritarian leadership.
