My uncle was stationed in the Air Force in Thailand, and married a Thai woman. When they moved to the states and started a business, she began sending copious amounts of money to her family in Thailand. I think they ended up divorced.

I do not know the real story of Anna and the King of Siam, but the Hollywood musical film, "The King and I", was a good one, as far as musicals go.
