If China were to attempt an invasion and fail, the loss of face would have deep and lasting consequences for China's long term goals. In plain English, it doesn't pass the cost/benefit analysis.

People don’t realize how difficult a naval landing is.
Satellites will record the build up for weeks, Modern anti-ship weapons are devastating. Taiwan has a lot of them

Today, China is the world's largest economy. Hundreds of millions of people have been lifted out of squalor.
