3. they pull off a difficult air attack on Iraq's nuke plant

The Third Reich Luftwaffe was certainly the most advanced airforce but times change. Misunderstood pacifism is the actual reason for the pitiful state of the today´s Bundeswehr.

That's certainly part of it. It is a reaction, and probably an OVER reaction to Nazi Germany, and their aggressive military activities. Remember, until not too long ago there was a law in Germany that banned their military from participating in foreign military actions.

Nationalism (Patriotism) has been bred out of the German people since the end of WWII, again as a reaction to being radically nationalist.

They were defeated because they went home having nothing accomplished. That is not to be confused with a nation defeated. You can see in the article Bush´s claim that Israel has won the war because Hezbollah has left southern Lebanon. But they didn´t.

The problem is that the US is rather requiring our "services" than protecting us. We have peace times and people think it will be like that forever. Only a strong military makes sure you are not treated like morons and we are.
