Yup...we should be concerned...the mood, rhetoric and political atmosphere in much of the west is awfully reminiscent of the 1930's. Things don't go very well for democratic values and principles.

In the case of what is happening in Europe violent nationalism is necessary. They have been invaded by a hostile people intent on destroying the people and the very civilization of Europe. If the Swedes, Finns, Btits, French, if Europe is to survive the national moods must get much uglier than they are.

And that is pretty much what they said about the Jews.

Except the Jews did not come to Germany and institute basically a reign of terror. Jews did not rape German girls, throw acid in people's faces, hack people to death. No. Jews did none of that. If they had they would deserve being sent to the ovens.

But there's a silver lining:

There's clearly a rightwing backlash going on worldwide. Trump was voted into office. Like it or not, people are in the mood of his style of authoritarianism. And that could go badly. If someone like Hitler were around to take advantage of it, it could be very bad indeed.

But Trump isn't Hitler. He has no seething rage at his core. He has no agenda, no ideology, no grand plan to inflict his will on the planet. He's random and crazy, and that makes him dangerous, but he's not a tyrant bent on world domination. We might want to think of him as a relatively harmless way for the fascists and rednecks to blow off steam. Granted, it may be hard to see the shift in the Court, or the chaotic foreign policy, as "harmless", but it could be much worse.
