Sweden's Air Force says its Gripen E fighter jets are designed to kill Russia's fearsome Sukhoi fighter jets, and that they have a "black belt" in that type of combat.
The Gripen E can't carry the most weapons, has no real stealth, isn't the longest-range, fastest, or even cheapest jet, but has a massive and respected electronic warfare capability.
The Gripen E is Sweden's cheap solution to killing Russia's fighter jets and surface-to-air missiles, and Russia probably can't do much about it.

Gripen E/F is just an retread of a lightweight fighter that first flew in the 80s, it's hardly some world-beater because of EW suite.

When a fighter manufacturer says stealth is irrelevant it's because they lack the budget/tech to build a stealth fighter, but still want to generate sales. Both Norway and Denmark compared Gripen to F-35 in their competitions for new fighters and went with F-35. All this talk of "active stealth" is marketing bullshit because effectiveness of EW is greatly magnified by the addition of passive stealth.

Biggest advantage to Gripen E/F over other modern 4.5+ fighters is it's cheap, or at least projected to be cheap. Who knows where the program itself will go, here we are in 2019 and they've got all of two flyable prototypes with projected IOC in 2023.

You may be thinking about the up engined B-239 to the B-339E standard. The Fins were allied with Germany until 1944. They had license built WRight Cyclone 1820 G-105 instead of the G-5 Engines that they mated to the 239 without permission. They still had a handful of these when they switched sides in 1944. At low altitude, these things were monsters and could hang with anything. They were used to kill the JU-87s primarily. But did tangle with ME-109s at low altitude where the Up Engined Brewster had the advantage. What's funny, Finnland had 109 of the German ME-109G-6 birds that they flew against Russia and then Germany as well for medium to high altitude. Germany needed the Nickel Mines in Finnland and invaded. Hence the Lapland War part of WWII between Finnland and Germany.
