The Super Bowl got off to a very slow start, but it had a very exciting ending. It broke the record which was set in last years game against the Eagles, which was a much better game than this years matchup.

The Super Bowl that had it all — Taylor Swift in the stands, overtime on the field and Patrick Mahomes’s magic — was a hit with American viewers, too. CBS announced Tuesday that the game was the most-watched telecast ever with a total audience of 123.7 million people, according to Nielsen data.

The audience eclipses last year’s 115 million, which set the record before this season. The demographics for the telecast were not yet available, but pop star Taylor Swift’s presence in the stands likely provided an influx of younger, female viewers. The game itself was also riveting, ending in overtime with a game-winning drive by Mahomes and the Chiefs, who beat the San Francisco 49ers, 25-22.

The figure is the total who watched on CBS, the Paramount+ streaming platform, Univision and Nickelodeon, which showed an alternate telecast geared toward kids. The audience on CBS accounted for the vast majority of viewership with 120.3 million viewers.

One caveat to the record is that several years ago Nielsen, the company that provides viewership data for linear television, began to count out-of-home viewing, introducing metrics for bars and parties. Total viewership numbers of sporting events have risen with the additional figure, making comparisons to previous years more difficult.

The NFL continues to defy the trends of linear television, where viewership for big events has been declining in recent years. The Grammy’s this year averaged 12.5 million viewers, up from a year ago but a far cry from the show’s heyday. In 1984, for instance, it averaged 51.671 million when Michael Jackson won a record eight awards. The Oscars drew 18.7 million viewers last year, also up from the year before, but the show hasn’t topped 40 million since 2014.

Thirteen of the last 15 Super Bowls have generated more than 100 million viewers.
