So does a Red Lobster waitress in Alaska, that is laid off because the higher costs have driven out customer's, have a claim? And if the restaurant closes does the Food Service truck driver, that is laid off due to fewer deliveries and higher deisel costs, also have a claim? Than I suppose the gas station owner, that closes shop due to a drop in deisel sales to the food service fleet, also has a claim. The fact that BP will have to create this 20 billion dollar escrow account over the next several years is not a bad thing. But having the federal government managing and underwritting it's claims is what is going to cause massive amounts of fraud and misuse. The middle class should get a pretty good clue on this as their tax cuts expire, their employers cut their health care and the price of gas rises to $5.00 per gallon.

I have no problem at all with BP paying for the damages related to the oil spill. It's the process. There was no negotiation in the sense of real negotiations. It was the Godfather style negotiation technique. "When I leave this room, your signature or your brains will be on this contract." That is technically a negotiation, but factually, not at all.

That was the negotiation technique of the Administration.

If, on the other hand, this is a negotiation in the truest sense of the word, what was given up to BP? No word on that.

If one team in the negotiation has a gun on the table and the other is allowed only to agree, that is not a negotiation. It is something else.

If you endorse this use of authority for one, you endorse it for all. What will be your attitude when they come to your table?

BP might very well have so screwed up this entire region that the economic fallout leads to all sorts of problems.

And yes, BP ought to be held accountable for each and every problem that stems from their mess.

Frankly, BP's total assets will not amount to anywhere near the total lost economy that could result from this mess.
