The ādisproportionate representationā of William Shakespeare in the theatre has propagated āwhite, able-bodied, heterosexual, cisgender male narrativesā, according to researchers in an Ā£800,000 taxpayer-funded project.
The claim has prompted critics to accuse the Arts and Humanities Research Council, which has funded the study by academics at the University of Roehampton, of promoting ācultural clickbaitā.
The project, devoted to ācentering marginalized communities in the contemporary performance of early modern playsā, is due to be completed in two yearsā time.
The researchers want to challenge the ānormative trendā in āclassical theatreā arising from āthe disproportionate representation of William Shakespeare in scholarship and performanceā.
In response they are mounting a production of a comedy by Shakespeareās contemporary John Lyly, Galatea, which features characters disguised as the opposite sex. The researchers say the play offers āan unparalleled affirmative and intersectional demographic, exploring feminist, queer, transgender and migrant livesā.
They say the play āhas almost no stage history since 1588ā, adding that āDiverse Alarumsā, the name of the project, āwill transform this state of affairs with a unique combination of methods, ranging across early modern studies, practice-as-research, audience studies, qualitative research, trans, queer and disability studiesā.
Comment:
Leave Shakespeare alone.
The Radical Left can write their own plays.
They are attempting to erase mainstream culture.
