“Boredom is a common emotion that people tend to avoid and it is typically considered a nuisance. In psychological science, boredom has been researched little; it seems almost as if many scholars assumed that a common experience such as boredom is trivial. What caught our attention was that more and more research suggested that long-term boredom had many scary correlates: depression, anxiety, problem gambling, and so on. It seemed that boredom was anything but a mere nuisance and could have a real long-term impact,” Wijnand van Tillburg, Ph.D., from King’s College London and the main author of the study told R&D Magazine in an exclusive interview.
“A reoccurring core theme that we found was a search for more meaningful engagement. People who are bored feel that their current activity (or lack thereof) seems utterly purposeless. As a result, they look for opportunities to do something that gives them a sense of meaning,” van Tillburg added.

I believe this is one of the reasons we need to get right wingers into school. To give their lives some purpose beyond mom's basement.
