How the heck did he keep that thing upright?

I don't think it's intended to be ridden with the wheel in a vertical position. If you look, he is vertical but the wheel is tilted. No reason why that wouldn't work, but it would handle like shit.

But what other attitude would or could the wheel be in?

I get the feeling its like a gyroscope. That its somehow weighted to keep the rider upright.
