Along with
Toronto and
Vancouver, Montreal was home to a Nakba Day demonstration, held on Sunday, May 14.
Nakba, the Arabic word for catastrophe, refers to Israel’s proclamation of independence on May 14, 1948, and is an oft-repeated term used by anti-Israel activists to describe Israel’s rebirth 75 years ago as a cataclysmic event.
The term ‘nakba’ is an expression of incitement not just against Israel, but against the Jewish People as a whole because it seeks to delegitimize not only Israel’s modern-day existence, but also denies three thousand years of continuous Jewish presence in the land of Israel. In essence, usage of the term ‘nakba’ seeks to both erase and rewrite Jewish history.
And sure enough, Montreal’s Nakba Day rally sought to achieve exactly that.
Prior to the demonstration, event organizer Montreal4Palestine promoted the event with marketing materials tacitly promoting Palestinian violence against Israel.
“Let us stand on that day with our sons and daughters…our resistance and all our prisoners. Let us lend our support to them as they are the only path to liberation. As outlined by the United Nations, any nation under occupation has a legitimate right to resist using any and all means,” the statement read.
By referring to resistance against Israel “using any and all means,” there can be no doubt that this statement from Montreal4Palestine includes acts of violence against Israel, presumably also against innocent Israeli civilians by means of terrorism.
The dangers of promoting Palestinian violence against Israel has very real-world implications.
Inside territories controlled by the Palestinian Authority (PA),
extensive incitement against Israel and promotion of violence has not only poisoned successive generations of Palestinians against any concept of peace, but has also helped to perpetuate ongoing terrorism, death and suffering.
One speaker who addressed the group, Mahmoud from Toronto4Palestine, encouraged those in attendance to “
take a second to thank our blessed resistance in Gaza…” Only one day prior to Mahmoud’s remarks, Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), an extremist Islamist group in Gaza, had agreed to
cease its attacks on Israel, though not before firing an
estimated 1,500 rockets at Israel.
