Stop Antisemitism

On Thursday, the New York City Council voted on a resolution recognizing April 29 as End Jew Hatred Day annually in the City of New York. It was introduced by Councilwoman Inna Vernikov.

One would expect that such a resolution would be approved unanimously. What could possibly be controversial about a resolution against antisemitism? It doesn't mention Israel. It notes the rising attacks on Jews in the city, which is obvious and supported by hate crime statistics.

But antisemitism is alive and well and spouted on the record in the halls of City Council.

After Vernikov and others spoke in support for the resolution, Council member Charles Barron said that he would abstain. The reason the issue was not fully supported by all, he said, is because the Jewish community is inconsistent in opposing hatred, specifically hatred of Palestinians. He then went on a rant about Israel "murdering Palestinian women and children and stealing land." he then accused Jewish leaders of having supported not only crimes against Palestinians but also apartheid in South Africa.

It was classic antisemitism, saying that because he (wrongly) perceives (some) Jews as supporting racism, he doesn't want to oppose a resolution condemning hate of Jews. Hate of some morphs into hate of all, a hallmark of bigotry everywhere.

It is also a perfect example of how hate for Israel is just another form of hate for Jews - why should Israeli policies affect one's vote against antisemitism?

Later, Shahana Hanif - the first Muslim City Council member in New York - gave completely different reasons for voting against the resolution. She claimed that the organizations behind the resolution were far-right wing, Islamophobic and anti-trans organizations, and implied that the City Council members who introduced the resolution were anti-trans as well, so therefore she "refused to collaborate" with them.

Of course, that should indicate an abstention, not a vote against the resolution. Alternatively, Hanif could easily have put on the record that she opposes the supposedly hateful organizations that she claims were behind the resolution but that she supports the idea of an "End Jew Hatred" day. Her choice to vote against the resolution can only mean one thing: she is against fighting Jew-hatred. And whether she likes it or not, she is sending the message to New York that the Muslim community is not against antisemitism.

Here's video of the entire discussion and vote on the resolution.

Today, we have people in positions of power who are quite comfortable publicly calling Jews murderers, thieves and Islamophobes and using that as an excuse to oppose supporting a minority Jewish community that is being physically attacked on the streets of New York every day.

At first it looks like an article about the fighting in Sudan, but writer Muhammad Kamel Al-Ayadi quickly gets to the root of the matter: Jews!

The media is one of the most important priorities of the Jews to control the world, as expressed by this Jewish Rabbi “Rashoron” in the year 1869 AD, when he said: "If gold is the first power, then the press must be our second power."

In the year 1897 AD, the Jews said in a conference held for him In the “Swiss Basel” the plan for the establishment of the state of “Israel” cannot be achieved without complete control of the media, especially the press, so that we have the ability to stir up people’s minds when we want and calm down whenever we want, just as our enemies should not have media through which they express their opinions. Rather, the press must be ridden and reined in.

And the Jews have a lot of dirty methods, which they are good at using, as a means of money, sex, and intellect, and to question political and religious symbols, and to work to end the role models, and spread competition between brothers, with the abhorrent partisanship, which is fueled by the global Zionist gangs, in order to serve their interests and aspirations to rule and control the Arab world, the genie that, if recovered, will devour all civilizations, not with injustice, but with the justice of its message, so they hatched conspiracies, spread strife, and ignited sectarian and tribal wars, to reach the ultimate goal, which is world rule, under the rule of one government, because they are the most deserving and deserving of its rule.

The Zionist conspiracies do not end, and the world saw what happened after the World Trade Tower was struck. Iraq was struck, and successive strife was stirred up in Libya, Syria, Yemen, Lebanon, and now Sudan, knowing that Sudan has a large percentage of the Jews of the Israeli community, who lived in it. As part of the social structure, they succeeded in establishing political, economic, and social relations, to collect money to achieve their aspirations, and to implement the “Bernard Lewis” plan in dividing Sudan into four states...

Since the fifties, the Jews have been working in order to reach and seize Khartoum, so they set up separatist movements in the south...

Wake up. And unite before our hands are shackled, and we cannot defend our lands, and we become between the walls of the occupation, we have no power or strength, may God protect Egypt, and the entire Arab world.

Of course, there are many Egyptians who wrote angry comments about how offensive this antisemitism is. Just kidding!

Five years after failing to enact anti-Israel BDS into law, the Irish Parliament is again considering enacting BDS legislation.

Reflecting years of NGO lobbying, on March 8, 2023, Sinn Féin spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Defence TD John Brady introduced the “Illegal Israeli Settlements Divestment Bill 2023” in the Irish Parliament.

The bill proposes amending regulations of the National Treasury Management Agency to prohibit government agencies from investing in companies listed on the discriminatory UN Human Rights Council “blacklist” of Israeli and international firmsoperating in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. If enacted, it would compel the Irish Strategic Investment Fund (ISIF) – Ireland’s sovereign wealth fund – to divest holdings in companies on the UN Blacklist.

The UN’s BDS blacklist operates under the false premise that international law prohibits business activity in occupied territory. In reality, such behavior is common, and occurs in conflict zones around the world.

(For more information on the blacklist, see NGO Monitor’s Key Issue: UN BDS Blacklist)

NGO lobbying

The new bill is supported by a prominent Irish NGO, Trócaire, a leader in BDS advocacy.

Trócaire’s funders include: Ireland (€24 million from Irish Aid in 2022), the EU (€5.6million), the UN (€3.4 million), Sweden (Sida; €1 million), and church-based Caritas agencies (over €4.6million). In 2021-2022, Trócaire spent €1.2 million on the “Occupied Palestinian Territory.”

Trócaire is a member of the Don’t Buy into Occupation Coalition, which in September 2021, published a report purporting to “investigate and expose the financial relationships between businesses involved in the illegal Israeli settlement enterprise in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT) and European Financial Institutions (FIs).” The report called for European governments to “prohibit the import of illegal settlement products and services from entering European markets, and ban trade with and economic support for illegal Israeli settlements.”

The identified substantive and professional shortcomings have only been compounded by the news that Amnesty worked to “soften” the criticism, and keep it from the public eye. Rather than taking its role seriously as “human rights” organization, by employing rigorous and reliable fact-finding procedures and employing careful and credible legal analyses, Amnesty is once again showing a preference for politics and public relations over factual accuracy and human rights.

Lest one think that the Ukraine press release debacle was an exceptional case, consider my efforts to get Amnesty to correct a particularly egregious, and demonstrably false, claim.

The specific claim is just one of many factual errors and omissions in Amnesty’s 2022 report that accused Israel of “apartheid.” But it’s a particularly noteworthy error for a few reasons. For one, it’s directly contradicted by the very source Amnesty cited. Two, the error is such that it implies either the authors deliberately misrepresented casualty figures or they do not understand the very laws they accuse Israel of violating. But most importantly, it’s noteworthy because at least two Amnesty officials have been directly confronted with the incontrovertible evidence of the error, and yet no correction has been issued.

In the report, as well as in subsequent promotional material, Amnesty claimed that a certain number of Palestinians were killed “outside the context of armed conflict” during a certain period of time. However, if you follow the footnote and check the source, you’ll discover that Amnesty’s claim is a glaring misrepresentation. That figure, according to Amnesty’s own source (B’Tselem), is for the number of people “who were not taking part in hostilities” that were killed during that period. The latter phrase is a reference to the laws of armed conflict and, as Amnesty’s own source explains, includes people killed during armed conflict.

(It’s worth noting that B’Tselem has a very broad definition of “not taking part in hostilities,” and thus the figure that Amnesty uses includes individuals who were actively engaged in violent events at the time of their death.)

This false claim was directly raised with an Amnesty representative in April 2022 at a panel at Harvard University, during which he spoke about Amnesty’s “apartheid” report. Though the representative claimed he could not address it on the spot (video of the full exchange is available here), he provided CAMERA with an email address to follow up on the error. Disappointingly, no response was forthcoming after an email was sent detailing the error (a screenshot of the email is available here).

Amidst the renewed violent clashes between the Israeli security forces and Palestinians on Temple Mount in Jerusalem during the coinciding Ramadan and Passover holidays, the German capital once again became a scene of public calls for the extermination of the Jewish state. On April 8, approximately 500 pro-Palestinian protesters marched through the street of the Berlin districts of Neukölln and Kreuzberg, both with large Arab and Turkish populations, chanting antisemitic and anti-Israel slogans and calling for the destruction of Jews and Israel. Some of the chants heard were: "Death to the Jews! Death to Israel!", "I generate the bloody body!", as well as "Tel Aviv, the answer will come!" Protesters openly glorified terrorist violence and praised the military arm of Hamas, the Qassam Brigades that is responsible for numerous suicide attacks against civilians, rocket attacks, and hostage taking. The protest was organized by the German branch of the "Samidoun – Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network," a direct affiliate of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), which simultaneously mobilized a protest gathering in Cologne.
