So, I get this new doctor at the Medical Center who seems ok but is telling me to take statins. Blood tests reveal that my thyroid is underactive which is causing LDL cholesterol to rise. I am going to go out on a limb and surmise that the doctor knows about: drumroll-the Framingham Study-Yahoo! Big studies are huge in the medical industry. They are like the Hoola Hoop craze of the 1960's. Nobody knows why citizens across the country went bananas over a closed piece of plastic stapled together joining a tube into a circle but it happened. I actually saw that happen! I even got one! So, should I just blindly follow what the doctor says and start taking statins? Not so fast, grasshopper.

You probably know local citizens in Keene who are more than willing to cut off another leg so they can keep smoking and drinking. There are many citizens like this in the city and some of them are in city government and embedded in local media. The city lifestyle is typical of people who live fast and die young. The young doctor may think I am one of those people. I told the doctor I am not one of those people but he may think I am selling him a bill of goods. Anyway, I am nearly 80 years old so certain changes will occurr metabolically and I accept this. If my thyroid is underactive like it is then my typical blood pressure of 86/54 could be an issue although I feel fine.

I did gain some weight last year but I have lost it since March when I got the bloodwork. I ride my bike all over Swanzey NH 40-50 miles a day. I go to a gym every day to keep bone density in order. There is only one marker a little off on the thyroid numbers and my sister has thyroid issues so there could be genetic component lurking here. The total cholesterol readings do not concern me at all. What does concern me is that the Framingham Study is misleading and there is no solid evidence that taking statins does anything to protect anyone from heart disease. Statins have some kind of interraction with the liver to lower LDL cholesterol but that cholesterol has a very weak connection with heart disease. Check the actuarial tables and you will see that those taking statins die from heart attacks and strokes at levels the same as those who do not. So, statins have the same effectiveness as snake oil which is why I am not taking them.

I notified the doctor that I will participate in a clinical trial to bolster my research that statins are worthless. I am 5'5 and weigh 126 pounds. My waist is 29 inches which is larger than 28 inches when I could run a 10k close to 30 minutes in 1985. I never stopped living a healthy lifestyle and I am comfortable with my decision to avoid statins. I am doing my own clinical trial now not just for me but for you as well.
Carry on,
Ray

if you can control your cholesterol without simvastatin, great, but the doc may have seen something ldl, hdl maybe something else in the blood work.

most men over 60 are on this stuff, which helps to prevent strokes and such,

at the very least please take a few moments to think about maybe a change in diet or exercise.

usual disclaimers apply.

Great idea. Do your own research. Obviously, some anonymous poster on the internet knows more than a trained doctor who completed med school, and then passed the board exam. Heart patients who take statins do die, but just not as fast as those who don't take them.

Thank you. The experts that feed and nurture the pharmaceutical industry would never steer us wrong right? We should all just line up to be part of the walking dead so golf carts, second homes, and exotic vacations for doctors can be available. Those statins and their side effects are the least we can do to keep this going. Yahoo!

I encourage you to just ignore doctors and diagnose and treat yourself. What could go wrong?

I know
What do you have to lose by just treating yourself?

It's wise to get a second opinion, but that opinion should be from a medical professional.

A friend's wife, who never smoked, was told she had lung cancer and they removed the upper left lobe of one lung.

Turns out she had pneumonia and the lab test for cancer was cross contaminated with someone who did. They have retained a personal injury lawyer.

A huge number of the residents at the Skilled Nursing Facilities I’ve worked at are people with manageable chronic conditions that got out of control precisely because they didn’t heed their doctors’ orders or didn’t take their prescribed medications

Physicians aren’t infallible, but their education and experience means they know better than you 99.9% of the time

And yet, the second you have a serious medical event I guarantee you’ll be the first seeking the help of physicians and nurses despite all your crackpot conspiracy theories

odd they did not notice that once they had her opened up.

My doctor is very hesitant prescribing new drugs introduced... She told me she usually waits ten years after the new drug is out there, and lets other people be the Guinea pigs, to work out the kinks and problems if they arise! 😁

But Statins have been around for a few decades now....your doctor likely knows what he is talking about....

My issue is you being 80 and him wanting this change, this new prescription.... Is it really necessary? Aren't your arteries already plaque filled by this age and what benefit will it really do, at this age? Talk to your doc again.... Then, follow his orders.

When my Italian born grandpa was 80 a doctor of his told him he had to stop drinking his one tall glass of Red Vino at dinner time due to some medical issue he had.. I think it was his blood pressure? He had his glass of red wine with dinner for the last 70 years, beginning at 10 yrs old mixed with soda....

It damn near killed my grandpa when he stopped....he hated his meals without it, he hated life...he was miserable! He went to see another doctor....and that doctor told him to go right back to drinking his wine...if he lived to 80 drinking it, then let him continue to do, what he's already been doing, and live in peace, happily, until he died..... And he lived another 10 years to 90yrs old.

One thing I’ve observed in LTC is that there are some doctors who have a weird aversion to acknowledging that 80-90 year olds are closer to death than not and treat them almost as aggressively as they would a 20 year old, regardless of the effect on quality of life.

Nurses approach these things differently

I think it’s because the medical model is focused on treating/fighting the disease whereas the nursing model is focused on treating the symptoms

I’m slightly skeptical that such a critical surgery as a lobectomy would be scheduled based off the results of a single lab test.
That's exactly what happened, but you're free to be skeptical. I heard for weeks she had cancer and surgery scheduled, and then I heard she was recovering. Now I've heard she never had cancer and was informed after the surgery there was cross contamination. And it was not only her, there were other lab samples contaminated.

such a diagnosis isn’t made without a slew of diagnostic testing. I don’t know what the “sample” you speak of was. A biopsy? Blood work? Whatever it was there’s tons of other testing done concurrently.

So a lab specimen was contaminated? None of the other testing would corroborate this. What about the MRI? What about cancer blood markers? What about tissue samples? Unless they were all contaminated as well, your story makes no sense
