Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels: Illinois is Like The Simpsons
Indiana Governor spoke somewhat mockingly about the Illinois legislatureÂ’s lame duck legislation and governor Quinn who asked for it, saying "It's like living next door to the Simpsons -- the dysfunctional family down the block."
"You guys are nothing if not entertaining over there," he said with a laugh on the Don and Roma show on WLS-AM, Chicago.
In the interview he went on to say "If you want to bring new jobs to your state the last thing you do is make it more expensive to hire people, and so we've been working for six years, we're now at the top of everybody's list of a good place to do business, and going in the other direction really is something that we're not prepared to do, and I hope you guys find a way not to also," Daniels said.
There are vast areas of open land in Lake and La Porte Counties Indiana, just across the state line from Chicago, and poised for becoming a manufacturing area and an “intermodal” transportation hub.
“Intermodal,” simply put, is the exchange between one mode of transportation and another — typically, from rail to truck. It is projected that trade across rail and highways will double in the next 20 years, and there is no
national strategy on how to deal with it presently. Daniels is the only political figure speaking to that important national problem.
The city of Gary, and the two county area located on the southern tip of Lake Michigan, are in the midst of every conceivable hub of transportation (surface, rail, ship and air), and have space galore available for development by business and industry. An expansion of that area into an intermodal hub provides immense economic potential.
Governor Daniels leased the Indiana Toll Road (a perpetual revenue loser) a few years back to an international consortium (for which he took a lot of heat from Democrats who ridiculed him as “the governor who sold the Indiana Toll Road to foreigners”,) and he also authored a plan to expand and improve Indiana’s transportation hub potential. He recently spent money from the toll road money to lengthen runways at the airport at Gary (Gary/Chicago International) to expand that potential.
