Our national history doesn't begin in 1776, it begins in 1619. And slavery didn't really "end" in 1865. They just found new ways to do it like Debt Peonage. Debt Peonage didn't end until 1942, and only then because Congress realized that it was a bad look the Axis could use for propaganda purposes.
