Trains? The closest train to me is in Cincinnati, OH and I am in west TN, and from there it doesn't go anywhere I need to go.

Automobiles work great for day trips but going anywhere further than 12 hours away it is better to fly. Older people can't ride that long. I drive 12 hours to my family in Florida. Any longer and I have to have a relief driver. Then you have to pay over a hundred or more for a cheap hotel room. That makes it cheaper to fly.
