WASHINGTON - Sen. Arlen Specter plans to promise quick hearings and votes on President Bush's judicial nominees, regardless of their views on abortion, as part of his effort to gain the chairmanship of the Judiciary Committee.
The abortion rights moderate criticized for saying anti-abortion judges would have a difficult time gaining Senate confirmation, given Democratic opposition, has spent the past two days explaining to fellow Republican senators that he wouldn't block Bush's judicial nominees.
Specter and other senators said he would release a written statement to further assuage conservatives, and to give cover to senators who are likely to vote for him to be Judiciary chairman when Congress reconvenes in January.
GOP sources told The Associated Press that Specter's statement would guarantee quick hearings and votes for Bush's nominees and affirm he would not impose a test on nominees based on the abortion issue
This is good news. honestly i dont think ive ever been worried about Specter chairing the comittee. He owes President Bush. He owes every Senator who puts him on the commitee. I dont think we are going to lose here.
