Presidents, until 1973 or so, exercised what was called 'The Imperial Presidency'. Nixon was the last of them.

FDR had more power than any President before or after. Ever. Even before he got us into WW2.

Truman, Eisenhower, even JFK exercised Imperial powers not spelled out in the Constitution.

Nixon was the last of them. In fact, that's why they took him down. His covering up for some minor misdeeds by some over-zealous underlings was just an excuse. It was a Battle Royale and the Presidency lost.
