For some time the following list or various versions of it have been circulated and attributed to Donald Trump. The fact checkers have all determined that President Trump or citizen Trump had nothing to do with this but I'm pretty sure he would endorse at least most of it. B

It is a proposed reform of the U.S. Congress to return it to being a servant of the people instead of a career opportunity to become far richer than they ever would have become otherwise.

Proposed Congressional Reform Act

1. No Tenure / No Pension. A Congressman/woman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they're out of office. And no more perks go with them.

2. Congress (past, present, & future) participates in Social Security. All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system, and Congress participates with the American people. It may not be used for any other purpose.

3. Congress must purchase their own retirement plan, just as ALL Americans do. Or the government can establish a 401K plan for them that they can contribute to while in office and take with them when they leave office.

4. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.

5. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people.

6. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American people.

7. Members of Congress and their immediate families are forbidden to buy or sell stocks that will be affected by pending or passed legislation.

Serving in Congress is an honor and privilege, NOT a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators should serve their term(s), then go home and go back to work … not get all kinds of freebies.

And why the cheap barracks housing option? It could be an option for those less rich people who run for Congress and find it difficult to maintain a residence in their home state and also in DC where rent can be up to 50% higher than the national averages. I would guess that only a very few if any at all would opt for barracks at Andrews though. :)

If a congressman I would choose the barracks deal. :)
I just threw in that as my own suggestion as the 'poorer' members of Congress often complain that it is difficult to support themselves and a family due to having to maintain a residence in the state they represent and also a residence along with high cost of living in DC. So inexpensive base housing--they would be expected to pay something covering maintenance, depreciation, etc.--could be an option. I really doubt many, if any, would take advantage of that though.

But if there is no snob in a person and he/she wanted to live on the cheap. . . :)

It is said that Elon Musk chooses to live in a small inexpensive $50,000 or so home and it has been reported that he has sold pretty much all his private real estate properties. So he would probably go for base housing if convenient. But a congress person? Not too many would do that I think.

If we send all the congress-critters from the barracks to their jobs at the Capitol on a short bus, they will feel right at home.
Every one of them.

I wouldn't object to that option. If they gave up all their perks and benefits and lived on their salaries alone, I wouldn't mind funding a shuttle bus to take them from Andrews to their office buildings and back.
