Small and large manufacturing businesses are bracing for potentially large cost increases for imported goods. Some of them are already warning employees that holiday bonuses are going to be cancelled and potential layoffs are going to come as they try to get imported goods delivered before the TFG administration takes over and nobody has a clue just how bad the hit is going to be.

One manager at a small Pennsylvania manufacturing firm had to explain how tariffs actually work — very few of his employees realized the the exporter does not pay the tariff. The importing company has to pay the tariff to get their goods out of the US (if you are in the US)) customs warehouse. That’s on top of already having paid the exporter the cost of goods and transport.

Trump uses tariffs as a weapon. If trading partners don't play fair...he hits them with tariffs. Invariably...they see the error of their ways and change their behavior. Then the tariffs can be eased. It's how the game is played.
