Solve all problems in one fell swoop... Consumption tax

The easiest and most efficient answer to all of the problems that are dominating the news and our political culture of late is simply to change the way we tax the country. A consumption based tax will not only triple the revenue but also eliminate the entire idea of illegal alien entry. Once everyone has skin in the game the resentment will disappear, nobody will mind. There's nothing like partnership to chase away personal resentment and there's nothing like favoritism to make resentment grow.

The frantic screams from marxists and socialists that such a tax would not be progressive is nothing more than class jealousy and the age old stupidity of hating the rich in order to feel sorry for the poor.

There is no question that it is the most efficient way to Garner monetary support for the government from the masses that are ruled by it.
The rich would still pay the Lion's share like they do now but the great big gap in the lower income groups who pay nothing would quickly vanish.

Supply and demand would regulate the tax rate quite nicely. We already have an army of tax collectors out there at the cash registers of every retail establishment in the nation.

The IRS could be reduced to 10% of its size.
Crazy tax burdens could be eliminated and the hundreds of billions spent every year on bookkeeping done away with.

Jo

Ah, yes the rich would love that. They'd pay so much less tax and the poor would get fucked up the ass daily by those taxes.

Yes, I wonder which rich person gave you that idea

Poor people screw themselves in the ass.

Poor people screw themselves in the ass.

Yeah, sometimes poor people are poor because they make bad decisions.

HOWEVER, some poor people are better off and others worse off based on how much their own government screws them over or not.

You wan poor people to be criminals? Screw them in the ass daily. Like America does, especially the Republicans.

Why do you think some are poor and some are rich? Someone getting rich doesn't make someone poor. Tell me how Bezos and Musk getting rich reduced your income?
What the hell you think happens. Rich people lay golden turds? Bezos is easy,

Musk, Starlink--more monopoly power.

Look, you can work hard, spend frugally, invest wisely, and you might end up pretty well off. But you ain't going to become a billionaire. To do that, you are going to have to collect rents. And when you engage in rent seeking, by definition, you are taking money from people that you did not earn. That is reality.

It was earned. It was the value given to someone to use your property for their own use.

You still have the risk of property ownership involved.

I never get the whole "you didn't earn that" mantra from the Marxists.

So how much did your income reduce by Bezos becoming a millionaire? To the nearest dollar would be good.

All a consumption tax would do for me is greatly reduce what I buy and move Whst I buy to the black market rather than regular businesses.

It would also decrease your tax burden

Why is it so important to you, to tax the working poorest among us? Why oh why?

We should go back to the good ole days, when we taxed ONLY the wealthy, when we had a standard deduction/personal exemption of $65000 each in today's dollars.

We balanced the budget back then...cuz the wealthy alone, had Congress's ear on what to spend it on....😁

-at what tax rate would the consumption tax need to be to cover the budget, 30%? 40%?

-a federal consumption tax will hurt the states, who rely on a sales tax for most of their budget, by stunting sales.

- is a consumption tax on everything you spend money to buy...like buying stock? Or buying real estate, or buying services like lawyers and accountants? Or Daycare?

Who decides?

Flat rate of 2% on all non luxury purchases. I recommend 100% on luxury purchases.
You can still run the Snap program....
Section 8 housing and Medicaid

The Tax revenue should increase three fold.

Last year's total GDP was about $30 trillion, the consumption part of GDP was about $19 trillion in 2024.

Our total expenditures of the government for 2024, was around +/- $7 trillion. ($6.66 trillion)

If every single thing we consume had a consumption tax on it, it would take a 35% tax rate on consumption, to collect enough revenues to pay for our spending budget of $6.66 trillion,

about a 40% consumption tax rate to pay for expenditures and pay down slightly, a little bit of our existing debt.

HOW DID YOU, come to your 2% ....it doesn't even come close to paying for our budget expenditures?

Is this consumption tax of yours IN ADDITION to our Federal Income taxes?

You're not adjusting for the influx of the now untaxed population.

Why would that matter? My figures SHOW that it would take a 35% consumption tax on all people here, and all that can be consumed, to collect enough money from a consumption tax alone, to pay for what we spend in the budget.

Your consumption tax plan, falls very very very very very SHORT on revenues needed to fund our govt with a 2% consumption tax or even with a 30% consumption tax, falls short.

It simply is not feasible.

I wouldn't say that a consumption tax would solve all problems, you cannot get enough revenue to make up the annual deficits without creating a recession or depression. Plus, it hammers to lower income people a lot more than the uppers. Consumer spending would surely be significantly reduced, and the GD gov't would spend as much of the increased revenue as they could. So, I'm not sure any problems would actually get fixed.

But I would say that it oughta be a part of the solution in some way.

The fact is that a consumption tax would be very feasible. You need to educate yourself.

Think outside the box. Your first floor is your definition of consumption. I posit that every purchase including every scratch ticket
And every service rendered is consumption. The total of 19 trillion is not even close to the actual consumption number it's just a government figure subject to government definition.

You also did not read the entire post apparently.
100% tax on luxury purchases. The rich will still bear the burden like they do now... The difference being the tax base is broader and everyone has skin in the game.
