AUSTRIA'S army is being boosted by conscripts who are volunteering to extend their stay in the military to help block migrants travelling from the Middle East to the heart of Europe.

In one company of 200 soldiers, almost half opted to remain policing the country's southern borders in an effort to stem the flow of illegal immigration.

The volunteers will man the land next to Slovenia in the coming weeks.
A defence ministry spokesman said: "In one company 74 recruits voluntarily registered to go to the border immediately after their six months of military service."
Defence minister Hans Peter Doskozil and interior minister Johanna Mikl-Leitner are considering additional measures such as those at its busiest crossing, with Slovenia, where a 2.5-mile fence has been erected to manage the crowds.
Mrs Mikl-Leitner told reporters this week: "We must of course be prepared for a shift in the routes.
"I cannot rule out that further fences must be built to secure our borders."....
