On December 20 1943 Franz Stigler came across a B-17 but upon seeing how shot up the B-17 and crew was Stigler couldn’t help but feel sorry. He caught up to it and flew with it in close formation so German flak wouldn’t shoot at the B-17. Stigler escorted the B-17 all the wall to the English Channel.​
